Paul: His Life and Teachings — Paul’s Scars and Steadfastness

Paul did not hide the scars, the beatings, the imprisonments, and the pressures—this is the hardship catalogue of a man faithful to Christ.

23 Are they servants of Christ?—I speak as if insane—I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death.
24 Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes.
25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep.
26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren;
27 I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.
28 Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches.

10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;

3 Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

24 But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God.

Dr. Jose Nacionales presses deeper into the hardship catalogue by showing that the apostle Paul never presented the Christian life as a path of ease and convenience. He brings the congregation face to face with the afflictions, imprisonments, dangers, and burdens Paul endured for the sake of the Gospel, yet without losing faith, conviction, or love for Christ. With earnest pastoral urgency, he reminds believers that true Christianity is proven not only in moments of blessing, but also in steadfastness under suffering. The message calls the church to endure faithfully, knowing that God’s sustaining grace is greater than every hardship.
